Rawlins Pershing Elementary School SERCD is providing monthly natural resource education to Pershing 3rd and 5th graders. “Let’s Make Soil and Eat It!” was presented to Erica Royer’s 5th grade class to begin their unit on plants and soils. The students learned the soil horizons and the process of how soil is made and the products we use each day the initially begin from the soil. At the end of the presentation they made “soil” by layering cookies, pudding, vanilla wafers, sprinkles and gummy worms in a cup and enjoyed eating it. The class is assisting Louis Espinosa and the City of Rawlins with beautification of the Rawlins Underpass. They have planted wildflower seed donated by SERCD. The district has also contributed $500.00 towards the purchase of trees, shrubs and grasses for the site. |

Monitoring Day via the classroom. The class was unable to go on site so water from the North Platte River was taken to the classroom. The students performed pH, turbidity, and dissolved oxygen and recorded their data.
The second presentation for the 3rd grade was ‘Hibernation’. Students were taught why animals hibernate and how they prepare their bodies for the winter. They also learned animals can be categorized based on their winter survival techniques which are adaptation, migration and hibernation. |
