Tire Tanks

Tire tanks continue to be an important tool in the water program. SER CD has increased sales of tanks over the past three years. Many are installed through NRCS cost share programs also. With drought conditions likely to continue these tanks will remain an integral part of District projects.

TIRE TANK INFO

SER CD has provided tire tanks for livestock producers for over 12 years.  The tanks were originally tires which were on mining operation trucks.  The district buys the tires through a dealer and maintains a small inventory.  About every 6-12 months the dealer will cut the tanks at the district’s storage site.   This involves slicing off one side of the tire leaving about a 24” high wall and creating a “tank”.  The tank is then set at the water source, filled with concrete in the inside center and backfilled for stability.    The tanks range in diameter from 8 – 12 ˝ feet and can hold from 700 to 1650 gallons of water.  Many of these tanks are used in cost-share programs through NRCS and in water development projects through SER CD.  The district is currently completing a project on an allotment to develop two springs and provide a water source away from the riparian area. This past summer SER CD provided a tire tank as a demonstration project at Buck Springs Rodeo Arena.
